Free Desktop GIS Softwares

Desktop GIS applications are free or opensource tools that can be download ed and used to aid students, faculty and staff with their research and project needs. These are geospatial or statistical applications which come in the form of software, extensions or plug ins.

Downloadable Geospatial Applications & Software:

  • QGIS is an free and opensource GIS which allows users to create, edit, visualize, analyse and publish geospatial information on Windows, Mac, and Linux operating systems.
  • GeoDa is a free and open source software tool that serves as an introduction to spatial data analysis. It is designed to facilitate new insights from data analysis by exploring and modeling spatial patterns.
  • GRASS (Geographic Resources Analysis Support System) is a free GIS software for geospatial data management and analysis, image processing, graphics/maps production, spatial modeling, and visualization.
  • Google Earth Pro is a free geospatial software application that displays a virtual globe, which offers the ability to analyze and capture geographical data.
  • Geospatial Modeling Environment (GME)  is a suite of tools designed to facilitate rigorous analysis of geospatial data. It combines the power of the statistical software R with the geographic processing functionality of ESRI ArcGIS to drive geospatial analyses
  • System for Automated Geoscientific Analyses (SAGA) is a free and open source Geographic Information System
  • Crime Analytics for Space Time (CAST) is a free and open-source, cross-platform program (Windows, Mac OSX and Linux) designed to detect spatial patterns and trends for event and area data.
  • CrimeStat IV is a freeware spatial statistics program for the analysis of crime incident locations. It is Windows-based and interfaces with most desktop GIS programs.GDAL
  • ArcGIS Maps for Office is an add-in for Microsoft Office that brings mapping capabilities into Microsoft Excel and Microsoft PowerPoint. With Esri Maps for Office, you can create a geospatial view of your data by creating an interactive map that includes data from Excel and ArcGIS services—all without leaving the Excel environment. An ArcGIS Online account is required for download.
  • DNR GPS is an opensource software built to transfer data between Garmin handheld GPS receivers and GIS software

  • Anaconda (Python)  is the leading open data science platform powered by Python. The open source version of Anaconda is a high performance distribution of Python and R and includes over 100 of the most popular Python, R and Scala packages for data science.

  • OpenRefine, formerly called Google Refine, is a standalone open source desktop application for data cleanup and transformation to other formats, the activity known as data wrangling.
  • Tableau Public is free software that allows users to create interactive data visualizations for the web. Users can easily drag and drop data into the system and watch it update in real-time.
